The works of D. Laurent, R.S. Loomis and L.P. Piriou have shown the richness and influence of Breton oral literature. Roland Loomis (1930 – 2018), known professionally as Fakir Musafar, was a performance artist and early proponent of the modern primitive movement. He has experimented with and taught body modification techniques such as body piercing, tightlacing, scarification, tattooing, and flesh hook suspension. At age four Musafar claimed to have experienced dreams of past lives. He reports having given himself his first body piercing when he was twelve. Based on his viewing of anthropological works he first performed a flesh hook suspension in 1966 or 1967. As an adult he gave himself the name "Fakir Musafar." Musafar has documented his experiences in writing about and teaching others "body play." In the early 1990s, Musafar appeared in mainstream media shows like NBC's Faith Daniels Show, CBS's People Are Talking, CNN's Earth Matters and Discovery Channel's (Beyond Bizarre). In 1998 He produced documentary segments for London Weekend Television's Southbank Show and Playboy Television's "Sexcetera." In 2000, 2001 and 2003 he appeared in documentaries for The Learning Channel (Human Canvas Part I and Part II), TBS, FX Channel and Discovery Channel plus a major appearance in the 2001 documentary film "Modern Tribalism." In 2004 he became a spokesperson for the National Geographic Channel's Taboo and has expressed "radical contemporary" views on body rituals on the Travel Channel's "Eye of the Beholder" series hosted by Serena Yang. Musafar's writing and photography appears in Theater Journal, Bizarre magazine (fetish and SM exploration), Skin Two and PFIQ (Piercing Fan International Quarterly). He has lectured and performed at London's Institute of Contemporary Arts (Rapture Series, 1995); Copenhagen's International Seminar on BODY: Ritual-Manipulation (1995) and Lisbon, Portugal's Festival Atlantico (1997). “Fakir Musafar first found pleasure in pain as a teenager named Roland Loomis in his family’s basement in the mid-1940s. It was the beginning of a lifelong passion for piercing, branding, tattooing, suspension, corseting and other outré practices that he would come to call ‘body play.’ After years of conducting these activities in secret, away from society’s judgmental gaze, he changed his professional name and became a performance artist and passionate body-play advocate.”

Fakir Musafar, aka Roland Loomis. Commonly credited as the originator of the "Modern Primitive" movement. At an early age he began experimenting with body modification, expanding from simple piercing into other, more obscure forms. Unlike many modern "freaks" Loomis sought mystical experience through his mods, studying the culture and history of the peoples who originated each particular mod. He still performs modifications today, at age 82.

One of the most influential figures in the rise of the modern body piercing is Fakir Musafar, the father of modern primitivism. Born as Roland Loomis in 1930, he grew up close to an Indian reservation in South Dakota, which inspired his imagination at an early age. Fakir is one of a few modern body art pioneers whose fascination with body adornment and modification and compulsion to experiment on his own body contributed to the existence of piercing as we know it today. He coined the term modern primitives to represent what he felt to be the connection between the practice of body modification and the spiritual use of piercing and other rituals, often taken directly from tribal practices. He views modern primitivism as an antidote to the superficiality of modern life. A handful of individuals - including Fakir - were deeply affected by the images of indigenous body art that appeared in National Geographic magazine. A number of these early devotees were inspired to emulate some of the modifications they viewed in those pages.
